Definition of Heterogeneous ChemistryHeterogeneous definition in chemistry is an approach that emphasizes the fact that properties of one chemical entity may differ with respect to the other elements present in the sample. It was first described by Professor Lewis Puck in 1969, but it has become a widely used model for the description of properties of chemical compounds over the years. In Heterogeneous definition, the molecules of a compound are given the same names as their corresponding atoms.Heterogeneous definition is used primarily for describing reactions and is also useful for describing chemical equilibrium. If we would have to choose between the properties of substances with the same molecular weights and with the same boiling points, but different molecular weights, the former would be more attractive, especially if we think about some specific problems. Thus, it is usually the least expensive model to use, especially if we have to deal with reactions and other types of the rmodynamic phenomena.Heterogeneous definition is usually thought of as the smallest possible model to explain chemical equilibrium. However, it can also be used in a broader sense of describing properties of chemical compounds, such as those with similar oxidation states. Sometimes, it is used in the same way as the partial pressure model, although the latter is not recommended.In its most basic form, heterogeneous definition requires that all of the elements of a mixture have the same chemical equation. The majority of calculations need to be done on the basis of the individual chemical equations of each atom of the constituent materials. This type of formulation is sometimes called a partial pressure model.Another type of heterogeneous definition is the dissociation model. In this formulation, one element is assumed to have a charge and is also assumed to have dissociated into two parts. For the dissociation of the metal into its two parts, there are some additional assumptions th at will need to be made, such as the determination of the melting point of the metal. Inthis case, one element is assumed to have a neutral density and, thus, dissociate in a way that generates a repulsive pressure.Another type of partial pressure model is the lump model. In this approach, one atom is assumed to be displaced into another atom or molecule. The objective of this type of heterogeneous definition is to determine the equilibrium solutions to certain chemical equations.Heterogeneous definition is a very useful model for describing properties of chemical compounds and for predicting chemical equilibrium. In certain situations, it is usually the best choice for dealing with chemical reactions. Dealing with Back-to-School Anxiety Everyone feels anxious on the first day of school. Even kids who love school and look forward to the first day feel some butterflies in their stomach as they wonder what their new teacher and classmates will be like. For kids with ADHD who have struggled with school in the past and whose relationships with classmates have often been challenging, the back to school jitters that they experience are often more intense than most. Even if they dont talk about feeling nervous, the anxiety will still be there and may show up in other ways like uncharacteristic irritability, difficulty sleeping, and complaints about stomachs and headaches. As a parent it can be hard to know how to help your child cope with his or her anxiety. In addition to strategies that help with everyday anxiety, like taking deep breaths or distracting yourself from anxious thoughts, there are a few important things you can do to help your child cope leading up to the first day of school. Help your child know what to expect. Anxiety often stems from not knowing what to expect when were doing something new for the first time. While you cant predict everything that will happen on the first day of school, there are things you can do to make the day feel more familiar and predictable for your child. Visit the school ahead of time and walk with your child to his or her new classroom. Allow your child to have some fun playing on the play structure or shooting hoops on the basketball court. Talk to your child about his or her new teacher. Share some of the good things that youve heard from other parents and kids. If its possible, have your child meet the new teacher ahead of time or create an opportunity for him or her to talk to a former student who enjoyed having that teacher in the past. Make sure your child is introduced to at least one classmate before the first day of school. If youre new to the area, talk to neighbors or someone at your childs new school to get tips on reaching out to some of your childs peers ahead of time. Encourage your child to share their feelings. Some of our greatest fears can lose their power when we share them out loud. Use those moments as an opportunity to listen and respond with empathy and encouragement. Empathize when he or she expresses feelings of anxiety, or when he or she shuts down and seems walled off. Let your child know that you understand that it can be hard to go back to school, and that he or she might wish that summer could go on forever. Normalize his or her feelings by sharing some of your own personal experiences with back to school jitters. Create space to focus on the positives. Anxiety causes us to naturally focus on the negative aspects of a situation. Remind your child about the things he or she enjoyed at school last year even if he or she says that recess and art class were schools only two redeeming qualities! Its important for your child to have something to genuinely look forward to when he or she heads through the school doors on the first day. Help your child feel in control of some aspects of his or her day. When kids return to school they have very little control over how their day will go. They are more or less told what to do and when to do it from the moment they wake up in the morning until school ends for the day. You can help you child feel more in control by allowing him or her to make choices and decisions about small things that will impact his or her day. Here are a few ways that you can build in some choices: Allow your child to pick out the snack that will be included in his or her lunch. Ask your child if he or she would like to get to school early to play on the play structure for a few minutes, or if he or she would prefer to arrive right on time and head straight into the classroom. Let them pick out his or her first day of school outfit. Ask if he or she would like to choose the radio station in the car. If you walk your child to school, ask if he or she would like to choose the route that you take. Engage in conversations about choices that your child will be able to make throughout the school year. For example, he or she may be able to choose a musical instrument to play, a sports team to join, or sign up for a special afterschool activity. As a parent you cant take away all of your childs back-to-school anxiety. In fact, some anxiety is normal for everyone in the family at this time of year. But you can help your child cope with his or her anxiety by helping him or her feel more in control, creating space for him or her to share his or her feelings, and helping him or her know what to expect on the first day back at school. LOI English Teachers Kathryn Johnson Getting to know people from all over the world is one of the perks of working and learning online. It is fun to talk to people with different backgrounds, that is why many of the LOI English teachers say that they love meeting new people and Kathryn Johnson is an example of that.Kathryn is from the United States and has a degree in Latin American Studies from the University of California. Nowadays, she is living in Chile and teaches English to people from around the world. Normally, her students are from Brazil, Russia and Japan, but she has also taught English in Chile in a government program to help students improve their TOEIC score.She told me that she had lived in Chile in 2005, when she got her certification to teach English, but then she moved back to the US. Kathryn believes that going where you feel happy is the most important thing, so when she was feeling stuck, she decided to move back to Chile to live by the shore, improve her Spanish and teach English.Kathryn said tha t she believes that the issues that Spanish and Portuguese speakers have are very similar and she uses her knowledge of Spanish and Portuguese to help those students. When I asked her what type of materials she normally uses to allow students to understand abstract concepts or to improve their knowledge of the language, she confessed that she is not that good with book references and said that she usually refers to movies to explain some concepts to her students.For example, one time, when she was trying to explain the meaning of the word mumble, she used the movie Dick Tracy, that has a character named Mumbles, played by Dustin Hoffman, that mumbles a lot! According to her, watching movies can also help improve the understanding and proper use of phrasal verbs.She also said that cultural differences sometimes can get in the way of learning English. That is why she tries to incorporate cultural aspects in the learning process, making sure to explain or give references of movies tha t can help students know more about the culture of English speaking countries and therefore be able to better assimilate her teachings.Kathryn is very easy to talk to and our conversation was pure fun. Now, she is working towards completing the Kumon Math Program as well. Itâs no surprise that Impa is ahead of her peers in school, while sheâs already studying the introduction of calculus in the 7th grade. âWorking on challenging material in Kumon makes me realize how important grit and dedication are,â said Impa. âI feel so proud and satisfied with myself every time I think back to those moments. I now know that the hardest mountain is the best one to conquer!â Wow, inspiring words from such a young girl. Tips from an Irvine Admissions Consultant: What Is A Holistic Admissions Process? Many colleges and universities advertise a holistic admissions process, but most students are unfamiliar with the term. In a time when test scores and a 4.0+ GPA is emphasized left and right, it seems like there isnt anything else that colleges look at. A holistic admissions process means that the college will look at the whole student. Students who have excellent test scores and a high GPA but have zero extracurricular activities may be at a disadvantage. However, students who are counting on those extracurriculars to help them get into college will do well to apply to at least a couple of holistic universities. So what exactly is the âwholeâ student? 1. Extracurricular and volunteer experience One of the things colleges want to know about a potential student is what they did outside of school. Although it can seem like the hours between 7:30 and 3:00 just never end colleges want to know what happens from 3 p.m. on. They may see one student who filled all of their required community service hours but demonstrated through their application that they werent interested in any of their community activities, and they might see another student who focuses in on using one of their passions or skills to truly make a difference in otherâs lives. Colleges will also look at a students hobbies or passions. If a student loves to draw universities will want to hear about or see that studentâs art portfolio, if they were heavily involved in beach cleanup throughout high school, theyâll want to hear about the studentâs passion for a clean ocean. Hobbies donât have to be related to a studentâs intended major, in fact varying interest makes for a well rounded individual (READ: 6 Ways to Ace that Job Search). 2. Personal circumstances Holistic universities will also look at a students individual circumstances. Perhaps a student had a passion for cleaning up the ocean but didnt have time to participate in this activity because they worked 15 hours a week to help their family. Some students may have only had access to the Internet at school or the library and may not have had as much time to study as their peers. Students who spend their afternoons working are encouraged to mention that as earning money is an admirable way to spend free time. 3. A member of the community Colleges with a holistic admissions process will also look at who will make a good member of their particular community. This is a tough one to explain because what a college is looking for in 2015 may be different than what they were looking for in 2010 or 2005. Students will often take it personally if they feel they have been rejected for this reason, however, each college will be looking for different students to add to their overall community. The same student might be a perfect fit for one college but not a fantastic fit for another. Individuality Another thing universities will look for is the individuality of to their student body. Many students go to college so they can learn about new people and experience something different than high school. Other students will quickly specialize in a particular field that may attract similarly minded people. For the most part, colleges will look for some type of individuality or originality in order to provide a diverse campus for their students. This is one of the many reasons why a students personal statement should express such originality. 5. Test scores and GPA Yes, a well-rounded student will also have to focus on test scores and GPA. A holistic admissions process doesnât excuse students from achieving the recommended grades and test scores for a particular university; it simply means that these arenât the only things the university looks at. In fact, many colleges look at test scores and grades first and foremost. Its still paramount that students achieve the scores they need to at least meet the requirements of the âaverageâ student at the university they apply to if they want to have a high chance of admission.
